Google Ads tracking setup – basic method

To automatically track keyword phrases from Google Ads within your A1WebStats account, you will need to modify your setup within your Google Ads account.

The good news is that it’s fast to do (it takes a few seconds per campaign).

This will allow you to see all visitors from Google Ads, sometimes including the identifiable company they came from, the keyword phrase that brought them in, and what the visitor looked at page by page.  Below you can see an example of this.

This may be set up by you directly or passed onto those who manage your Google Ads for you.

There are two ways to do this:

  1. The quick and easy method (covered within this page).
  2. The slower but more beneficial method, which allows you to see more of the Google Ads clicks and analyse them at a granular level, including which ad creative resulted in better quality traffic.

If you are new to A1WebStats and don’t need the granular level analysis at this stage, the setup on this page will be right for you.  You can add on the other method of setup at a later stage, if you choose to dig deeper into what you are gaining from your Google Ads clicks.

Step by step

This takes you through the basic setup step by step, which you will need to do for each individual campaign you have …

Step 1

Within your Google Ads, select one of your campaigns and then click on Campaign Settings.

Step 4

Within the Tracking template field copy and paste this: {lpurl}?keyword={keyword}&medium=ppc&network={network}

Then click on Save to save your changes.

Don’t put in any of the custom parameters unless you have them already in your campaign.

Step 5

Leave it for a day (you can do this faster if you have regular PPC traffic and want to watch for your new visitors) and then look at your A1WebStats data for the time after you made the change, focusing on Google Ads visitors.

You should see that you’re now seeing keywords for all new Google Ads visitors since you made the change.

If it’s not, then contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

After setup

This page shows you how to analyse return on investment from Google Ads after you have completed the set up and have allowed time to accumulate clicks to then analyse.

The upside to this method of Google Ads tracking

Quick to set up – 2 minutes maximum

The downsides to this method of Google Ads tracking

  • May not track ALL your Google Ads clicks.  This is because people access Google Ads in different ways and in some cases the easy method of tracking can’t pick up that those clicks came from Google Ads.  Therefore, there may be some differences in the number of clicks you see within Google Ads, compared to those you see within A1WebStats.
  • Doesn’t allow you to dig into detailed level analysis.  Although you will be able to see all the clicks from Google Ads, you won’t be able to easily track individual ad groups.  For example, you may want to see the impact of one advert over another, including how those people then went on to engage with pages within your website.

The solution to both the above downsides is to use the more advanced method of tracking.
